Supplements to Get Mom That She Will Actually Use

Around this time we always see gift guides for moms and honestly, most of the things on those gift guides are overpriced random stuff, and my mom and mother-in-law wouldn’t like them.

For the past few years, I love using holidays as an excuse to get my mom something that will benefit her health as a little add-on. Often times moms don’t prioritize their health and don’t think to get themselves supplements.

I know even since being pregnant I’m like “Ah I wish there was a pregnant “sprinkle” where I could get some good supplements gifted to me!” Haha.

Everything listed below is what I personally take and would want my mom to take daily. Maybe she is getting one or two of these in her Mother’s Day gift bag this year if she’s good ;).

For all these supplements I could and most likely will write more detailed blog posts on the break down their importance but for now, I will give short overviews on them but also feel free to dive in and do your own research as well!

  1. Collagen:

Most women are not getting enough protein and even if they are, many are not getting the benefits of collagen because in America we mostly eat low-fat muscle meats which are missing other minerals and amino acids that collagen has.

Collagen isn’t meant to replace meat by any means, but it’s an amazing thing to add to your diet daily.

I got my mom on collagen a while back and she adds hers daily to her coffee but it can be added to yogurt, soups, smoothies, really thing that you find mind getting a little thicker.

I also got it for my 90-year-old great-aunt and she said it greatly helped her legs from flaking.

There are a few great brands out there but I really enjoy Great Lakes. You can get Great Lakes at most Trader Joe’s but also online. Also Perfect Supplements I have heard is an awesome brand though I have not used them yet.

I stay away from Vital Proteins because they are now owned by Nestle.

2. True Vitamin C

Most moms that aren’t even health-conscious know vitamin c is good to have on hand, but sadly most use pretty bad versions of vitamin C that can actually cause more harm than good. Most store-bought vitamin c is made synthetically and is missing many core parts of vitamin c.

If you turn around most vitamin c’s and read the label it says “ascorbic acid” as the form of vitamin c. Ascorbic acid is not the whole vitamin c, it’s only the outer shell of the vitamin, which means it’s missing some key parts!

Though I won’t say that’s horrible if you’re in a pinch and need a quick boost but taking it long-term can lead to negative side effects because over time your body will need to grab the rest of the components of the vitamin from your body, which in essence can cause you to be vitamin c deficient.

The best way to get vitamin c is from food-based supplements where you are getting the whole vitamin c and not just a part of it.

I use Acerola power in my smoothies or add it to my orange juice. Getting it in powder form will be cheaper than a capsule, but some moms, like mine, really don’t make smoothies so getting a capsule is worth the extra money to make sure she uses it.

This is something she can and should take daily but also is amazing when any form of sickness is coming on.

3. Organ Pills

Since we are mainly eating muscle meats and not organ meats, we are missing out on some key nutrients found in other parts of the animal that are nutrient powerhouses.

Liver and Kidney are my favorites, though liver is more popular, I found that kidney increased my energy levels more than the liver. Plus I do just eat liver so I don’t need to spend the money on the pills.

There is also a combo of all different types of organs which is a good option as well.

This is a great way for mom’s to get in extra vitamins and minerals without having to cook up organ meats if that’s not really their thing at the moment.

4. Shiljat or Trace Minerals

Every human needs minerals and in America, because our soil has been so depleted that everyone is going to be missing minerals in their diet unless they add them back in.

As women age, often they lose even more minerals, which is why making sure mama is getting those minerals in is super important to helping her not developed bone issues or thyroid issues.

Shiljat has been around for thousands of years. It is a brownish/black resin that comes from layers of rock in several mountain ranges throughout the world, such as the Himalayan, Tibetan, and Altai mountains.

It is rich in minerals but not all brands are good to take.

I used to buy a more expensive brand but found from a trusted source that this brand on Amazon is just as good and more than half the price, which means one for you and one for mama.

Trace minerals are another great way to get minerals in. She can add a few drops to her water or juice.

5. Salt

Salt might seem like a strange gift but really, salt is one of the most important things we use daily so making sure it’s high quality should be a priority.

The right salt should contain lots of minerals, have a vibrant salty flavor, and not be, Heaven forbid, bleached.

I love Redmonds salt and gifted this to my mom. She liked it so much she also got it for her brother.

A more expensive brand I like just a little better because I personally love the chunkier salt is Crucial Four salt. You can read on their website all the details of what makes their salt awesome.

I hope you enjoy these supplements for mom! Giving the gift of health is one of the best things are can give those we love so dearly!

Happy Mother’s Day!
